What are the types of Knowledge required by a lawyer?

It is tempting to think that Knowledge Management for lawyers and legal firms is about managing legal knowledge. It is not. The business of law is only partly about knowing law.

In a legal firm, whichever size it may be, there are several categories of knowledge that needs to be managed. The principal categories include the following:

  • knowledge of law, practice and procedure;

  • knowledge of the firm (mission, vision, strategies, objectives, businesses, capabilities, policies, processes, procedures, infrastructure, etc);

  • knowledge of the market (clients and potential clients, competitors and competition, market intelligence, etc); and

  • knowledge of the legal industry (courts, judges, professional and regulatory bodies, etc).
